Our Work.
What We Do
Transforming Challenges into Opportunities
TEGEM’s work centers on addressing gender disparity and creating pathways for empowerment. We focus on three core areas:
Team Building
Girls taken through inspiration talks that compelled majority to give testimonies on unusual behaviours and how they are willing to change for better.
The benefited from a self- discovery session, where the mentors deep dived into their lifestyles and explored the girls’ potential in many aspects with amazing results.
Girls come out as best public speakers, some aspiring to be role models and ambassadors to their villages. They promised and confessed to be change agents for in their areas of residence.
To this effect, we had a number of girls coming to give a presentation and 2 of the girls volunteered to be Master of Ceremonies for the closing event with great performance leaving their parents in disbelief.
Girl Child Mentorship
In collaboration with the Tieng Adhola Cultural Institution, Tekere Girl Child Empowerment organises girls’ camp called Saga panyarwoth that is an annual event, targeting girls of ages 12- 17 years old.
The first of its kind was held from 18th – 22nd December 2019 at St James progressive Secondary School- Achilet, Tororo with a total of sixty three (63) girls in attendance representing the sub counties of Kisosko, Pajwenda, Iyolwa, Tororo central, Magola and Petta.
This was premised on the idea of mentoring and supporting the young girls to be responsible women. The initiative addressed issues concerning cultural norms and values, inspiration for morally uprightness and ability to yarn for better future while avoiding exposures to sexual abuse and exploitation within their families/communities that may prevent them from realising their dreams.
The theme: Uplifting cultural values, Inspiring young girls for Excellence.
This initiative involves briefing parents/guardians as well about the whole concept and program and why “Saga Pa Nyarwoth” targets their daughters.
Vocation Training
With the COVID-19 pandemic where we predict more challenges, having a lot more effect on the economy may leave many people in absolute poverty, thus likelihood of more child marriages in many parts of the country and transactional sex among adolescent girls. At TEGEM, we cherish the long-term greater benefits for our girls and as such, are committed to address the root causes of the sexual violence and ensure prevention alongside the pandemic of Corona virus.
Being cognisant that the pandemic has not come along with these inequalities against innocent girls but exacerbated by the selfish opportunistic individuals in the society who cannot spare these innocent girls and are taking advantage of the confinement due to CODID-19.
Child Quality Care
Women all over the world have a right to safe motherhood. They have a right to life. They have a right to live free of gender discrimination and violence. Yet, millions of women experience violence, which takes a great toll on their health and the health of the family and the community.
Globally, the health burden of violence against women is comparable to the burden of other risk factors and diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, childbirth, cancer and heart disease. That is why it is necessary to address gender-based violence in health and development programmes. Of course, as I said earlier, gender-based violence is also a human rights issue.
Another health and human rights issue is family planning. The right to freely determine the number, timing and spacing of one’s children and to have the means# to do so, is an internationally recognized human right. This basic right maximizes choices, and enables women and couples to control fertility and thus to have a larger degree of control over the rest of their lives. Family planning is also critical to health, both for the mother and the child.
The impact
400,000 children, in nearly 20 districts
TEGEM has reached over 400,000 children across nearly 20 districts, transforming lives through education, health, and empowerment programs. Our impact continues to grow as we equip girls with knowledge, skills, and opportunities to build brighter futures. With each district we reach, we bring hope, support, and lasting change.
